I have found that to love Christ has three effects: warmth, melody, and sweetness. And I know from my own experience that these cannot persist for long without bringing great inner stillness and silence.
These three things are signs of pure love; they are tokens of the spiritual perfection that is found in the Christian religion. To the limits of my meagre nature I have received them, as a gift from Jesus.
I dare not compare myself with the saints who have experienced these things, because they received them far more fully. But I shall continue trying to grow in virtue, so that my love burns more fervently, my song becomes sweeter, and I taste the sweetness of love more fully.
